Help me Design a New Room

My daughters share a room. A very small room.

I know this is a horrible photo. This is one already on my computer from a couple of years ago, taken before the sun was up. That said, their room looks pretty much the same today. Swap out the stuffies for books, and we have the same room.
My girls no longer like their room. Or, at least the almost 7yr old doesn't. She says it is a baby room and she doesn't like fairies or princesses.

My girls need to continue to share. The way the rooms in our house are, the only way they can have their own is if someone moves downstairs. I don't want the kids on a separate floor than us while they are little.
As you can see the room they share is tiny. So, I'm thinking of getting rid of their nice Captain beds and making this.

Or these...

I would actually love to buy them some bunk beds, but white bunk beds are not in my price range. White is not so easy to find. Especially in Northern BC.

I'm thinking new comforters with duvet covers made out of this. These fabrics are from the Groovy Collection from Riley Blake.

Or maybe the pink colorway.

Or, maybe both (one likes pink and one likes blue).

I'm personally in love with this other Riley Blake collection (Sugar and Spice), but my girls aren't sold.

Now, if I were to go with the 3rd collection, I would paint their walls a very pale turquoise. I think we will be going with the groovy collection though. What color for the walls? :)

How do I talk my girls into number three? :)

  1. A nice pale pink (maybe use the lightest peace sign) would work with the groovy fabric. Although I am with you and I LOVE the raspberry creek fabrics!

  2. You could paint the walls a light, vibrant grass green or a sunny, warm (but not pastel) yellow.

White bunk beds of course, and you could use the bottom pattern in the Groovy collection for the duvets. Using some mossy brown would bring in an earth color, and accenting with the blue color from the collection would bring in some sky.

A pink rug, small chair or pillow and you've got a fun room that would reflect nature and (hopefully!) please both girls. :)

  3. love all 3 collections-i need to do my 5 yr old and 7 yr old's room over too-thanks for the ideas :) i was thinking of turquoise and red so the 3rd collection popped right out but the 1st and 2nd collections seems very relaxing to me and really bring in alot of other colors, not sure about a wall color with those collections, maybe the green color in both of them...... so, you've given me some ideas but basically i've been no help to you :)

  4. i love #3 best! Tell them that is what a(my) teenager would pick???

  5. Actually I think a pale turquoise would work with any of those fabrics. Personally, I like the third best, but my girls would want more pink.

  8. Have you thought about something like these? Then they'd have room for a friend to sleep over.

Here's a lot of other designs in case you want to look.

I love the first colorway myself. I think you could jazz it up with some bright burst of color, and not get tired of it.
    Good luck!

  9. Agreed, the last collection is very nice. If, however, you end up with the first (and possibly even the second), I'd be tempted to go with orangey-toned walls.

  10. My girls would go crazy over the aqua Groovy fabrics. They would want aqua walls too, but I would steer them toward lavender. Cute, cute fabrics!

  11. How fun! It looks to me like many of the prints can mingle nicely. Maybe focus on the red groovy fabrics, mix in some reds from the bottom stack and still do the aqua walls? Pale pink would look cute too.

  13. Maybe it is an idea to put different wallpaper on the different hights of the beds. You could make that go the whole room around, like pale blue on the top part, and green on the lower part - like sky and grass. You could make them choose different items they would like to put up there, so they can create their own theme. Another option is to keep the room "neutral", and have them choose wallpaper or a theme just on the sidewall to their beds. That way you have them involved in personalizing their own space. You could also create this look on a sort of boardmaterial, so they can put up drawings or craftwork, and take it of again. You could do that with wallpaper or fabric, and change it when they get bored with it (little girls do, don't they...). The quiltmaterial looks fantastic, lovely springy, fresh, and not too girly (as in fairy, princess etc.)
I would also try and give them both a table and chair, so they have their own space for playing or crafting, or writing. Maybe with some secret drawers, how cool is that!! Integrate readinglights and a place to put a book or a toy in their beds, too. They need that.

  14. maybe try to convince your 7 yr old that in 5 years she probably won't like the first two fabrics any more. or just pick the third and have them put their own finsihing touches on the room....stuff that could be easliy redone or interchanged.

  15. I would paint a dark steel grey. Sounds horrid but looks amazing. And actually opens up a room, since the walls seem to disappear into the background. Also goes with any color you want to put in, anything at all.
I would put in 2 loft beds, with space underneath for each to either have a desk or have a reading nook. It wouldn't have a bigger footprint than what you have now.
We got our bunk bed here:

I was looking for something very sturdy that would last forever, and be made in the US. Extremely satisfied with my purchase! Their beds come unfinished, so you may paint or stain them any color you want.
We actually had each child pick their color and then painted the top half one, and the bottom half another color, depending which child would sleep on the top/bottom. I put a strip of magnetic paint as the partition, then covered it with decorative paint, and now they hang up pictures with magnets right on the walls.
Remember that paint and accessories are only temporary and that you could change them faily inexpensive if you had to. Have fun!

  16. Tell them the other fabric is sold out?? :)

  17. LOVE Ana's plans! And building something for your girls will be so rewarding. I might appeal to their not wanting baby-ish stuff to get them on board with #3. Good luck!

  18. I would say to convince them maybe find a way to make a story board like of the options, let them have their say and "help" them decide. I would go with a turquoise or like a pp said a grey, this way when they out grow the "girlie" colors....and they will...then you can just update with fabrics! GOOD LUCK! Ps. I love the red with the turquoise! wish I could do it in my bedroom!

  19. Hello,
I'm a "silent reader" of your blog and just wanted to tell you about beds which are higher but with some room for your daughters' stuff. We have them here often in Germany for small rooms. Maybe you have them, too? Like this one on ebay: http://cgi.ebay.de/Hochbett-MISS-GRIOTTE-Schreibtisch-Schrank-neu-/160561951377

    Best wishes,
    Alex

  20. I would paint the walls white. Jazz them up with some of the fabric you use for the beds (and I love that groovy fabric) on stretched canvas or in embroidery hoops. Then when the get bored of it you can just replace the fabric without having to re paint.

Looking forward to seeing the after photos :)

  21. My girls share a room that is only about 10x10 feet. We looked at making one of Ana's beds but ultimately ended up getting white bunk beds with a dresser in the stairs and drawers underneath which enabled us to get rid of their dressers and gave them so much more space (I think it was factorybunkbeds.com).

The girls each have a quilt that is the same pattern but different fabrics (same tones), there are lots of colors but it works.

  22. I really like the second set of beds. My two oldest (7 and almost 11) would really like the first two fabric collections. The oldest is all about everything with peace signs and would like the blue collection. DD2 likes peace signs because her sister does but would probably pick the pink. They actually just stopped sharing a room a few months ago, and they had bunk beds. DD2 moved in with DD3 (almost 2), and when the baby gets older we'll probably get bunks. I admire your ambition to build your own beds.

  23. I would paint the walls a pale green (light apple green) or a yellow. I would do 2 different comforters - one in each colorway so they would match but still have an individual look, though I do love the Sugar and Spice.
