Baby Bear Hat

What do you think? I'm planning to give this to my new baby nephew when he is born in October. A wee bitty baby in a bear hat = cuteness, right? :)

I couldn't resist though...

A girlie version would be so adorable!

This one though is my personal favorite....
Just a little bit of pink, so sweet.

I bought the pattern from Inner Hooker if you'd like to make your own. The pattern was well written and easy to follow. She also has many other sweet patterns.

Now, my husband thinks our 4 and 6yr old girls could still get away with wearing a hat like this but says our 2yr old little dude is too old. What kind of double standard is that? I think this would be perfectly appropriate for Little Dude come fall, what do you think?

I purchased this pattern. Inner Hooker had no idea I was going to make this post.

Scrapbook Paper Gift Bags

Who knew there was such a shortage of little gift bags in our town? Not surprising as it's often hard to find what you are looking for here due to the lack of shopping. Little gift bags though? I thought I would easily find a couple at the grocery store, or our one big box store. Nope.
I needed little ones, because they are for these...

Two of my 6yr old's friends are a set of twins. They are moving to England this week and my sweet girl wanted to give them a gift. She bought these with her piggy bank money. I thought of sewing little gift bags but  I hate sewing little fiddly stuff that will probably get thrown out in the end anyway.

I remembered I had a big stack of scrapbook paper in a box somewhere. Once upon a time I thought I would become a scrapbooker. I bought a stack of fancy paper and a pretty album. I completed two pages! I love looking at scrapbooks but they aren't my thing to make. So, yay! I found a way to use up two sheets! Read on and I'll give you the simple instructions so you can make pretty little bags too. One sheet makes a bag perfect for small things like jewelry, or you could put a couple of sheets together to make a larger bag. They would be really cute as party favor bags!

What you will need:
-Scrapbook paper
-Ruler
-Glue or tape
-Ribbon
-Hole punch

This is the back of my scrapbook paper. I made a bag that was 5 inches tall, 3 inches wide, and 2 inches deep.

Notice there are 4 rectangles on top that alternate, side, front, side back.
  • The width of your side rectangles are how deep your bag will be.
  • The width of your front/back rectangles are how wide your bag will be.
  • The height of your top rectangles should be one inch taller than you want your finished height.
  • The bottom rectangles should be the height or your side width. The width of your bottom rectangles should just carry down from the top.
  • The narrow rectangles on the right are just a tab to help you glue or tape your bag together. I chose 1/2 inch.
After you have your drawing done cut off your excess paper. Then, cut your bottom rectangle lines up to where they meet the top rectangles. Your bottom sections will be the bottom of your bag.

Fold along all of your lines. You should fold all lines inward. I added an extra inch to the height so I could fold the top down one inch. You can leave a "raw" edge but I prefer a folded edge. Now fold up like a box.

Hole punch two holes on each side and add some ribbon for handles.
To give your bags that gift bag look and not a box shape don't forget to pinch the sides in.

Add some tissue paper and you're all set!

Etsy Finds!

Happy Saturday everyone, I hope you enjoy this week's Etsy finds!
Something for everyone in the family and nothing over $50!

For Mom...
I've been really into looking at clothing lately. I think it is because I don't have any! I have never owned a bolero style jacket before, but I love this one. I keep going back to look at it. It just looks so comfy and stylish. You can find it at BeVisible for only $29.

For Dad...
Don't you think more Dads should wear their kids? My husband has always been really good about carrying our kids around in our Ergo carrier, but would never use the sling. He always said it felt too small. Check out this Super Wide ring sling from Babyette. It's big enough for Dad to feel comfy! Babyette's feedback on her slings is also amazing. This sling is $44. An excellent price for a baby carrier!

For the little guy...
I know this one is for a baby, but I just think this fabric jingle ball from The Polka Dot Tot Spot would be such a great gift for a little one. It's fabric, so it is soft but has some jingle when thrown. I know that my 2 1/2 yr old would probably still love playing with this. At only $12, I think it would be money well spent.

And for the little girl of the family...
A beautiful personalized sterling silver and swarovski crystal bracelet. I saw a bracelet similar to this yesterday in a little boutique we have here. It was so pretty, but then I looked at the price and had sticker shock. I have to tell you the swarovski crystals were so sparkly, it was a gorgeous bracelet. This one is only $26, much less than the one I saw! You can find it at Jewelry and Baby Bling by Dara.

Have a great Saturday everyone and happy shopping! :)

These Etsy shops have no idea who I am or that they are being featured today. I just like to share things I like!

Newborn "One Size Fit Many" PJ Pants!

Shannon, at Luvinthemommyhood is having a Baby Bonanza! You see, she just had a new baby! A very sweet adorable baby girl (you have to click over and check out her photos)! The past several weeks she has had guest bloggers share baby related tutorials twice a week. There have been so many wonderful tutorials posted, if you have a new baby or know people with new babies you don't want to miss them!

Shannon invited me over today to talk a little bit about motherhood and to share a project. I agonized over what kind of tutorial to post. You see my original tutorial, the one I was going to share, was a huge failure (maybe one day I will finally figure it out and be able to share it with all of you) :).

So, I started thinking about all of the things I want to make my new nephew (he will be born in October), and it hit me! Newborn "One Size Fits Many" PJ pants! Of course, these ones won't fit many, just newborns, but how cute would they be?

So, I scaled down the pattern and made a pair for my soon to be newphew to match Little Dude.

They are teeny tiny and I think they will best fit 1-2 mos.

Click HERE to download the pattern pieces.

Now, go over to the original "One Size Fits Most" PJ Pants post for the full tutorial (the newborn size assembles exactly the same way). The only difference is for the cuffs you will need to cut a 3inch by 3 inch piece for each one. If you missed the original post you can read more about them there, as well as find the link to download the pieces for the "One Size Fits Many" version. Perfect for all of your appliques. As some readers mentioned, they would be super cute to make birthday PJ's, or Christmas PJ's....Halloween will be here soon! I really think these would be adorable with ruffles! Speaking of Halloween I need to find some orange/black striped knit for this very project! Aren't stripes awesome?!

I hope you'll enjoy these teeny tiny pants. I'm looking forward to seeing some posted to our Flickr group. Please post em if you make em!

Don't forget to check out Luvinthemommyhoods Baby Bonanza, you'll love it!

Also, if you haven't entered the Baby Giveaway sponsored by Tonya's Temptations, don't miss out on your chance to win!

It's a Baby Giveaway!

Well, I'm not giving away babies, but I would love for someone to give me a baby!

I think I have yet to post something for babies... If you have a wee baby stay tuned tomorrow because I'm going to post something you might like!

Now, for a little giveaway aimed at the babies! I recently had the pleasure of visiting the little Etsy shop called Tonya's Temptations. Tonya sells lots of different hand made items, mostly for the little ones.

Things like....

This "Guess How Much I Love You" baby gown and cap. If I had a newborn I would buy this in a second! Wouldn't it make such a sweet gift paired with the book. A-D-O-R-A-B-L-E! It's a steal too, go look!

Bibs! All made with an absorbent hidden layer and made out of designer fabrics.

And wooden teethers. Made with kiln dried maple and eye catching fabrics and ribbons. I wish I had come across something like this when my kids were babies! My kids never liked those rubber teethers. One of my children even used to bite the corner of the coffee table.

Tonya has many more wonderful things in her shop too, but you'll need to click over to find out!

Now, for the giveaway. Two lucky winners will each win a wooden teether of their choice! To enter, all you need to do is go on over to her shop and then come back and leave a comment telling us what you love most.

Giveaway closes Tuesday June 29th 7pm PST

Also,  you can purchase a wooden teether from Tonya for only $6 for the duration of this giveaway. Just note in the comment section during checkout that you read From An Igloo and she will refund you the difference!

Good luck!

Your Photos!

I have some things to post but no time to take pictures! The school year is ending here next week and this week is full of end of the year festivities. Which, to me, means baking, sewing and volunteering. I can't wait for another 10 days when I'll be able to blog in the morning in my PJs! :)

This is the perfect opportunity though for me to post some of your photos that have been sitting in my email account. Be sure to also check out our Flickr group as there are always new photos of your projects popping up there! I love seeing the things you've made!

This is going to be a post of all dresses. First some "In The Garden" Twirly Shirred Dresses...

This is Shauni's pretty daughter in her kindergarten graduation dress. I love it, it is darling! I'm going to be making the same dress for my daughter's kindergarten graduation this week.

DJ's daughter jumping on the trampoline I think! I love her cute little haircut, so sweet.

Elke's daugther showing off a twirl! I love her haircut too. I wish I had the guts to cut my girls' hair! Love the fabric combo too.

Now for a couple of One Hour Sundresses...

This pic is a bit blurry but too cute not to share. This is baby girl Faith. Look at this precious girl! I love the eyelet Faith's mom used on her dress.

And, Jennifer's adorable daughter. Look at that big smile, I think she likes her dress! I love the stripes mixed with the polka dots. You can visit Jenny on her blog Perrilyn Creations.

I also have a few Reversible Sun Tops to post, but am about to be late for a T Ball game! :)

Hope you are all having an equally busy (in a good way) Tuesday!

If I missed your photo it is only because I'm a scatterbrain and am in a bit of a rush. Shoot me an email and I'll be sure to include it next time.
Don't forget about our Flickr group!

Happy Father's Day!

You might think this is an old photo but this is from April! This is what it looks like around these parts at least 6 months out of the year, sometimes more.

Wishing all of the Dad's, Grandpa's, Papa's and every man that makes a difference in a child's life a happy and wonderful day!

I am blessed with an amazing husband and hands down one of the best dads in the world! He goes to work all day, and then comes home never too tired to wrestle with the kids, play a game, colour a picture or play trains. Always willing to give swing rides and go for bike rides, and bath and brush the kids when Mom can't stand one more minute. He also empties the dishwasher which is a nice bonus!

Dad told us this morning that all he wanted for Father's Day was to take the kids to a movie. How cool is he?!

Remind me of this the next time I want to wring his neck for leaving his stinky socks on the floor of the family room and when I have to wash his whiskers out of the sink.

Happy Father's Day!

Fabulous Etsy Finds!

Another great week for Etsy finds! I don't think there could be a bad week, there are so many wonderful things to find!
I've found something for everyone in the family, and remember, everything is under $50!

As usual, ladies first....
Check out this bag from Kinies. I love the front pockets! They have lots of other cute bags in their shop too. These bags come from Malaysia, but I think the shipping is pretty reasonable. $38!

Next, for Dad...
This would be perfect for my husband. Aftershave lotion, herbal mist (aftershave), clean shave bar and lip balm. All hand made with natural ingredients free of parabans. Most husbands don't think of buying products free of chemicals. This gift set is $24.99, but what is even better is that La Conchita Naturals has lots of yummy looking things for you too!

For the Little Dude....
I love this log truck! My Little Dude would absolutely love this! I can just see my little guy stacking the logs in and out and driving it around. Can you believe this hand crafted truck is only $19? You can find it at Wooden Toy Junction along with several other wooden vehicles.

And last, for the little girl of the family...
These cupcakes are adorable! Can you believe that they are crayons?! These would actually be perfect for a little boy too, I know my little guy would love these. I found these at Red Elm Designs. Their shop is full of unique hand crafted crayons. This set is $24.99 for a set of 24. These would be perfect party favors. They also sell smaller sets though, as small as 6. What kid wouldn't love to colour with a cupcake?

I hope you enjoyed my Etsy finds this week!

These shops have no idea who I am or that I have featured their shops. I just love handmade things and want to share some cool finds!

Last Minute Father's Day Idea

Ok, first off, pretend my blog isn't cutting off part of my photo. I'm not sure how to fix that!

Do you need a last minute gift for Father's Day? Give this super sweet gift from the kiddos! Easy and fast (as long as your kids cooperate). I wanted to get this up to show you as soon as possible, and in our case, I think we will be doing a redo at some point tomorrow. Dad came home in the middle of our photo shoot.

Your photos don't need to be perfect though, your subjects are perfect enough and Dad will think any photo is adorable!

So, here is what we did...

Cut the letter "D" and letter "A" from poster paper. Sit down each kid with a letter and take their photo! We have done this in the past spelling "GRANDPA". If you have one child you can take their photo holding each of the letters. The different expressions they make would be super cute! Or, if you have lots of children you can spell out an entire phrase.
Like the Duggars, they could spell out "DAD YOU'RE AWESOME!!!"

The more kids you have, the better!

We are going to put our photos in a little 3 picture photo frame, but you could just make a collage using photo editing software and put them in one frame.

Have fun! I would love to see what you come up with. :)

PJ Pant Action Shots

I said I would post some action shots of the One Size Fits Many PJ Pants. Well, this post is very misleading because these photos would be the opposite of action shots. Little Dude has been under the weather, and not his usual self at all.

When our girls were this age I celebrated them getting older, yet watching this little peanut grow up is heartbreaking. Is it always like that with the baby of the family? Mothers should be able to freeze time whenever they want and hold their babies for just a little bit longer. *sniff*

I am doing my best to brainwash him and keep him my sweet pea forever. We have this conversation quite often...
Me: What do you like better, chocolate chip cookies or pretty girls?
Little Dude: Cookies!
Me: Ok, so when you are 16, what would you rather do... go on a date with a pretty girl or bake cookies with mommy?
Little Dude: Cookies!!
Hubby walking in: Noooooo!!!! How many times do I have to tell you that is not the right answer!
I cover Little Dude's ears
The end.

Someone remind him of this when he is 16....
I know, I probably should seek help.

Back to the topic at hand, these aren't action shots, but show these jammies are cozy to sleep in. And, that's what's important, right? :)

One Size Fits Many Baby/Toddler PJ Pants

I bring to you today, a one size fits many PJ pant for your babies and toddlers! I hope you enjoy the pattern as much as I enjoyed making these PJs for my little guy. There are only certain times in life I think you can get away with wearing things plastered on your bum. Baby and toddlerhood is one of them. People everywhere should remember this! :)

Now before we begin, let's get a few things straight:
  • I'm a mom who happens to like to sew. I don't draft patterns for a living. That said, this pattern works for me and I think will work for you too.
  • I designed this pattern after my 2 yr old little dude. I happen to think that this pattern could work for children ages 6 mos to 3yrs- possibly 4 yrs, with some very easy adjustments which I will help you with.
  • This pattern is meant for use with knit fabrics. Any type of knit should work great for the pants. If you would like cuffs on your pants you will need to use a stretchy interlock or cotton lycra. Not a non stretch jersey.
  • Use a stretch stitch or small zig zag for all seams.
  • Use a ballpoint needle.
Start by downloading your pattern pieces HERE

Cut out and tape your pieces together as shown. Now, I forgot to put the standard 1 inch box on my pages, and it was too much trouble to take this back to be rescanned. So, once your pieces are together, your piece should measure from top to bottom aprox 23 inches. You will also have the center back piece to go along with this.

A few notes about sizing:

  •  I made these pants long. You can either hem them or add a cuff to the bottom. The pattern piece as is will fit up to a size 3 allowing for a hemmed pant. If using cuffs you will need to remove some length. One nice thing about cuffs though is you can make them long as the ankle will be tight preventing them from being too long. So, you can have growing room. I suggest cutting the pant legs as is and adjusting length later unless you are making for a baby and know you will need to cut off several inches.
  • In the photo you will see side by side the pattern made as is (I adjusted length slightly) and using a larger seam allowance to make for a smaller child and shortening lengths significantly. This pant now went from being a 2/3 to being 12 months.
  • A chubby 6 month old does not vary in size much more than a 2yr old other than height. This allows the pattern to fit a range of sizes by only adjusting pant length, and elastic in the waist. For a younger baby I would suggest using a 1/2 inch seam allowance instead of 1/4 inch. For a young baby this will be a looser fitting more wide leg pant. For an older toddler this will be a snugger fitting pant.
  • If using a stretchy knit I think this pattern could fit up to a size 4 but be a snug fitting "long underwear" type PJ pant. These fit my slim 4 yr old and very slim 6 yr old. In jersey these would not fit my girls. It would have to be a stretchy knit. Keep in mind you could adjust the legs to be slightly wider.
  • If making for larger than a size 2 I suggest adjusting the rise of the pant (the top of the pant). For a size 3, I would add 1-2 inches to the top height of the pant, and for a 4 I would add 3 inches. The rise as is would be perfect for a baby or young toddler. On my 2yr old they come a bit below the belly button. If you cloth diaper you may also want to add some rise for that cute diaper butt.
  • If making for any other size than a 2 I would suggest making a test pair. :)

Fold your knit in half and with the stretch going side to side put your pattern piece on top cutting two pant legs.
Use your pattern piece labeled "back" to cut out one back piece and embellish if desired.
If you would like cuffs on your pants cut two pieces of stretchy knit 7.5 inches X 3.5 inches.
Also cut a length of 3/4 inch elastic equal to your child's waist.

With your two leg pieces right sides together sew the front seam (this is the straight one).

Now, in the next step you are going to begin to sew in your back piece. The easiest way to do this is to have your back piece face up on the bottom and your leg piece on top. Line up the top edges... (pant is pulled back to show you the back piece is on bottom).

You'll notice the back seam of the pants, and the curve of the back piece go in opposite directions. This is why we want the back piece on the bottom. We want to follow the curve of the back piece and not the back seam of the pants and the easiest way to do that is to have the piece that you want to follow on the bottom. Using your hand, gently curve the back seam of the pants to match your back piece and sew. The back seam of your pants should end at the bottom middle of the back piece. See next photo.

Where the back seam ends and falls on the back piece, is the bottom middle of the back piece.

Now, we want to attach the back seam from the other pantmleg. This time you are going to start where you left off. We want to keep following that curve. You'll notice your last back seam piece probably went over the mid mark just a tinch. So, overlap your 2nd back seam by just a tinch and following your curve all the way around sewing your 2nd back seam on.

This is what you will have at this point.

Turn your pants back to inside out and starting at the ankle of one leg, sew up on leg, around the crotch and back down the other leg joining the legs of your pants.

Clip the curve in the crotch of your pants being careful not to cut through your stitches. This will ensure that your curve lays flat when you turn them right side out.

Take your cuff pieces and fold in half sewing down the short edge to create a tube. Do this with both pieces.

Now, fold each piece in half lengthwise matching raw edges. One side will have raw edges and the other side will be a folded edge. Make a mark opposite your seam.

Turn your pants right side out and make a mark opposite the inner seam on each leg. Now take one of your cuffs and matching the marks you made and seam marks pin aligning raw edges. Your cuff will be smaller than the opening on your leg. This is what will make the leg cuffs tight.

Stretching your leg cuff as you sew (to make it the same length as pant leg), sew onto bottom of pant.

Flip the cuff down and this is what you have! A nice tight ankle cuff.

Fold your top edge in one inch and make casing for your elastic. Measure a length of elastic equal to your child's waist. Insert into casing, overlap an inch or two and join.

You're done!

You can't have super cute PJ pants without super cute matching tops! I wish I had a free pattern to share with you, but for these tops I used a pattern from Ottobre Magazine. The pattern I used in this tutorial will give you a similar top. It is Carla C's All The Rage Raglan from You Can Make This. If you want to add wrist cuffs as I have done with the dinosaur top, just measure the wrist opening of the top and cut the length of your cuff 75% of that. For the width you could use 3.5 inches just as we did with the cuffs of our pants.

Now my Little Dude isn't wearing jammies with the feet cut off of them! And to think, if I lived closer to actual shopping I may just have run out and bought him some new jammies and he wouldn't have had these adorable ones! Nice thick 100% cotton and made with love. Much better than the poly blend ones I would have found at our only big box store.

I hope you have fun with this pattern! As always, I would love to see your photos! Puhleease upload them to our Flickr Group! :)

Hopefully in the next few days I will have some action shots to share with you. I promise you, these are adorable on! Our Little Dude has been sick the past couple of days and has been wearing these day and night.

Have a great day my friends!
